Guardiol throws subtle dig at Declan Rice ahead of Arsenal match

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola isn’t famous for statements that drive headlines, but what the Spaniard has perfected in his press conferences are subtle statements that often times are too political that they are laughed at despite there being hidden meanings.

The former Bayern Munich manager has reacted to Declan Rice choosing the way of Arsenal as opposed to the Etihad prior to the England international’s move to the Emirates.

Declan Rice made a club record transfer from West Ham United this summer to link up with Mikel Arteta’s team in an English record fee for an England international.

Prior to the move being confirmed, the former West Ham midfielder was a subject of interest from a host of clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, with the Gunners and City this summer being the closest to nabbing the star from the London Stadium.

Manchester City saw a £90m bid rejected for the 24-year-old before Arsenal returned with an improved offer of over £100m to secure Rice’s signature.

Pep Guardiola however ‘politically’ believes Rice will be an “incredible player” for their Premier League title rivals.

According to the Barcelona legend, Rice had always wanted to play under Mikel Arteta despite the interest from Manchester City.

“Rice decided on Arsenal so all the best,” he said.

“He’s an important player, a very nice guy and for England will be important. For Arsenal, what an incredible player,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield final at Wembley.
