Ex-Sporting Director, Michael Edwards rejects Liverpool return

Former Sporting Director of Liverpool, Michael Edwards has rejected a return to the club after contact was established to bring him back over the weekend.

The move for his return to the club comes on the back of the previous Sporting Director Jorge Schmadtke was announced to be leaving Liverpool following the conclusion of the January transfer window.

According to Sports journalist, Fabrizio Romano, the plan by the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group was to put Michael Edwards in charge of Liverpool‘s restructuring in the aftermath of Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the season.

Edwards’ return is speculated to be in a more senior role as opposed to a Sporting Director role, which he reportedly turned down.

Romano wrote;

“Liverpool have made contact with Michael Edwards over the weekend. FSG plan was to offer to be in charge of the restructure at the club.

“Understand Edwards has rejected #LFC proposal as he’s not interested even in a more senior role as of today.”

This places FSG under more pressure to get things sorted out in time to facilitate the appointment of a new manager.

A host of names so far have been linked to the job, although with nothing concrete at the moment regarding who will be appointed as the next manager.

Rumors state Xabi Alonso has already been approached, with the club alleged to be waiting on an affirmation or rejection.

In a related report, it is believed that another former Sporting Director of the club, Julian Ward has attracted interest from Liverpool’s arch rivals, Manchester United.
