Denmark’s Deputy Prime Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen resigns over stress in Office
‘Retirement comes when the stress of office overwhelms you’, and for Deputy Prime Minister of Denmark, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, this happens to be the case as he makes the surprise decision to step out from politics.
Jakob Ellemann-Jensen made the surprise announcement of his retirement from politics, citing stress and overwork as the primary reasons behind his decision.
Ellemann-Jensen revealed his departure shortly after returning from a six-month leave of absence, a move that has significant implications for the liberal Venstre party, a key component of Denmark’s ruling coalition.
During a press conference on Monday, Ellemann-Jensen, who also serves as the economy minister, stated,
“The short version: I am quitting Danish politics completely and permanently today.”
His resignation also means he will step down from his leadership position within the Venstre party.
The Venstre party has faced declining approval ratings, partially attributed to its participation in a coalition government led by the Social Democrat Mette Frederiksen.
Jakob Ellemann-Jensen expressed concerns that his personal presence had overshadowed the party’s accomplishments in governance, hindering its progress. In light of these challenges, he has decided to take a step back.
Reports indicate that Ellemann-Jensen’s party colleague and defense minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, will assume his governmental responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Venstre’s vice chairman, Stephanie Lose, will manage organizational tasks for the party until a new party leader is elected at the party’s annual conference scheduled for November.
