Dele Alli slams Amazon over All or Nothing Documentary

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has expressed his dissatisfaction with Amazon’s “selective editing” of the 2020 Tottenham documentary, claiming that crucial footage was omitted, including Jose Mourinho’s subsequent apology for labeling him as “lazy.”

In an emotional interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, the 27-year-old discussed his career struggles, battles with addiction, and the pivotal decision to seek rehab. Alli even revealed that he had contemplated retiring from football at the young age of 24 after losing his place in the Tottenham side.

During the interview, Alli addressed the portrayal of his relationship with former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho in the All or Nothing documentary. The documentary featured Mourinho branding him as “lazy” during a team meeting, which garnered significant attention.

However, Dele Alli disclosed that the incident occurred after a recovery day and emphasized that Mourinho had subsequently apologized when he witnessed Alli’s commitment in training the following week.

“Alluding to the team meeting, Alli insisted that Mourinho had used the phrase after a recovery day – and that when the 60-year-old had watched him in training the following week, he actually apologized,” Alli revealed to Neville.

In the interview, Alli expressed his frustration that the documentary did not include Mourinho’s apology, highlighting the absence of any public acknowledgment of the coach’s remorse. Alli and Mourinho were the only ones aware of the apology since it occurred during a private conversation.

“In the team meeting, he called me lazy, but then one on one, I think it was on the pitch, he apologized for it. And I didn’t think anything of it at the time because I know myself – I’m not lazy,” Alli clarified.

The English midfielder also touched upon the perils of social media and the misconceptions it can create, emphasizing that what people see online often does not reflect reality. Alli believes that the “lazy” label has been unfairly used against him in the past, as others have taken advantage of the narrative portrayed on social media platforms.

“What you see sometimes isn’t the way it really is. I think, especially now with social media and all these things, we can really portray something that isn’t real,” Alli noted.

“After that, I think people definitely tried to use that, for some other decisions. Yeah, for sure, and I think other coaches maybe, for other reasons why I wasn’t playing, they stuck to that – the lazy one – because it was kind of an easy, easy one to use. And the problem was probably more than that, I think.”

Dele Alli‘s revelations shed light on the complexities of player-manager relationships and the impact of media portrayals. His comments highlight the need for transparency and accuracy in documentaries to present a more comprehensive and fair picture of events.
