In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Mr. Michael Adeniran, the father of the late Whitney Adeniran, a student at Chrisland Schools Opebi, made a devastating revelation in a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja. On Monday, he shared a painful truth – that his beloved daughter was already lifeless before being rushed to the hospital.

Adeniran recounted the moment he received the shocking news from the school nurse. With tears in his eyes, he revealed that the nurse had informed him that Whitney’s life had slipped away, even though she was not a doctor. The nurse had noticed her dilated eyes, a distressing sign of the tragedy that unfolded.

The Lagos State Government had taken legal action against Chrisland School Limited, Opebi, its principal, vice principal, and two others in connection with the untimely demise of Whitney Adeniran. The charges included involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts, stemming from a tragic incident that occurred on February 9, 2023, during the school’s inter-house sports activities at Agege Stadium.

During the trial, Mr. Adeniran, the first prosecution witness, was cross-examined by the school’s counsel, Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN). Adeniran confirmed that Whitney had been absent from school on February 2, 2023, but not due to illness.

He recounted a previous incident where the school had called his wife, Whitney’s mother, on January 20, 2023, informing her of their daughter’s illness. In response, Whitney had been taken to Inland Specialist Hospital in Ikeja, where a doctor prescribed medication. Although Mr. Adeniran couldn’t recall the drug names at that moment, he later referred to the doctor’s report from February 16, 2023. It revealed that Whitney had been prescribed nitrazepam 5mg and amitriptyline 12.5mg.

When questioned about the cause of Whitney’s death as reported by Agege Central Hospital and Diagnostic Limited, Mr. Adeniran confirmed that he had been informed of her passing due to cardiac arrest. However, he couldn’t recollect whether oxygen had been administered to her during her stay at the hospital.

The most heart-wrenching moment came when Mr. Adeniran shared what the school nurse had told him. She had done her utmost to save Whitney, but it was too late. Whitney’s eyes had already dilated, an agonizing sight for any parent. Despite her best efforts, the nurse couldn’t declare Whitney dead as she lacked the qualifications of a doctor.

This tragic tale highlights the deep pain and sorrow that Mr. Michael Adeniran and his family have endured. Losing a beloved child is a parent’s worst nightmare, and the circumstances surrounding Whitney’s passing only intensify the anguish. As the trial continues, more details will unfold, shedding light on this devastating incident.

The Adeniran family, along with the entire Nigerian community, awaits justice for Whitney, praying that her memory will be honored and that such tragedies will be prevented in the future.
