Chelsea Needs To Be Bold – Glen Johnson On Mason Mount

Former Chelsea defender, Glen Johnson, has revealed that the Blues would prefer to sell midfielder Mason Mount for £100 million rather than see him leave for free. Mount’s contract talks with Chelsea have stalled, with less than 18 months left on his current deal.

Although the England international has expressed his desire to remain at Stamford Bridge, negotiations with the club over a contract extension have reached an impasse.

Speaking to Betfred, Johnson urged Chelsea to be bold in their approach to Mount’s future at the club. He highlighted the financial risks of allowing the talented midfielder to leave for free, saying that Chelsea would be better off selling him for a high fee now rather than losing him for nothing in the future.

Glen Johnson said:

“The clock is ticking and Chelsea need to be bold regarding the business side of it. In 2024, if Mason’s contract does expire, then he would probably go to a rival Premier League club for free anyway. If he does not sign a new deal, then Chelsea may as well bite the bullet and take the money for him because you would rather sell him for £100 million than see him leave for free.”

Mount’s importance to the Chelsea squad has been clear since his breakthrough into the first team during the 2019/2020 season. Since then, he has been an integral part of the team, playing a vital role in their Champions League triumph last season.

With his contract talks at a standstill, the 22-year-old has been linked with a move to other top clubs, including Manchester City and Bayern Munich. Chelsea’s options are to either sell him now for a high fee or risk losing him for nothing in the future.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will be able to reach an agreement with Mount over a contract extension, or if they will cash in on him during the summer transfer window.
