Uruguay mourns deceased footballer Juan Izquierdo

The football world is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of Juan Izquierdo, a 27-year-old Uruguayan defender whose untimely death has cast a dark shadow over the sport.

During a Copa Libertadores match on August 22, Juan Izquierdo, playing for Nacional, collapsed on the pitch in what has become a devastating moment for his teammates, fans, and the global football community.

Izquierdo’s collapse, which occurred in the 84th minute with no one near him, was the start of a harrowing sequence of events. The young player suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to Hospital Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, where he was placed under neurological critical care.

Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Izquierdo’s condition worsened, with doctors reporting severe brain damage and a life-threatening increase in intracranial pressure. Surrounded by his family, including his parents, wife, and two-year-old daughter, Izquierdo tragically passed away on August 27.

Nacional’s heartfelt statement on X captured the collective grief:

“It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo… Juan, you will be with us forever.” The entire nation of Uruguay joined in mourning, with all football activities suspended over the weekend in his honor.

The news of Izquierdo’s sudden death has resonated deeply within the football world. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde expressed his sorrow, noting the profound sadness that has gripped everyone who knew Izquierdo.

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez, who played alongside Izquierdo at Nacional in 2022, paid a poignant tribute during Inter Miami’s match, lifting his shirt to reveal the message “Fuerza Juan” after scoring a goal.
