They are now fighting for their future — Graeme Souness
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has named two Reds players that he believes are fighting for their futures at Anfield. According to Souness, some Liverpool players are facing the risk of being replaced by new signings in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The club’s current campaign has not gone as planned, with the Reds suffering from injuries and fatigue from their mammoth 63-game season. As a result, various areas of the pitch are seen to be in need of a refresh, with a number of additions to the midfield department likely to be made this summer.
While the centre of midfield has improved since the return of Curtis Jones from injury, Souness believes that the young midfielder is one of the players that need to prove their worth to the club between now and the end of the season. Jones certainly proved his point on Sunday, opening the scoring in Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 win over Tottenham at Anfield.
Speaking to Sky Sports prior to the fixture, Souness explained that Jones and fellow young Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott have to show the manager that the club doesn’t have to buy expensive midfield players when they already have talented options in-house.
Graeme Souness also noted that the same applies to Spurs players, who are also fighting for their futures. He believes that many of them have shown that they are not up for the fight on a regular basis this season, and that they need to prove their passion and commitment to the club.
Graeme Souness, who won the European Cup three times with Liverpool in the 1970s and 1980s, emphasized that playing for a big club requires consistent effort and focus, and that the players need to be on top of their game every week. He stated that the players who have not shown this level of commitment this season are at risk of losing their place in the team.
