The Premier League Title Race Goes down to the Wire

Call this season all you want; dramatic, nervy, predictable, scripted, there is no denying that this season has provided premier league lovers with exciting football moments both for neutrals and for fans.

The Liverpool-Manchester City title race doesn’t end with 3 or 2 games to go. It always goes to the final day. And the 2021/22 Season is the second of those, after Liverpool made sure to capitalize on City’s dropped points yesterday to West Ham, with a win against Southampton.

It was a breathe of fresh air and relief for the Liverpool fans as the hosts; Southampton came with a game plan into the fixture hoping to win. And they very much could have.

Their attack was direct, with Liverpool’s defence and backline being over ran in the first half due to slight mistakes here and there from the Liverpool players as Chelsea player on loan to Southampton, Armando Broja had a decent game in attack against the Reds.

Liverpool after the FA Cup final against Chelsea that ran into 120 minutes, started the game with multiple changes to the line up, with only Ibrahima Konate and Alisson Becker being the only 2 players that reprised their roles in the starting eleven.

It seemingly was what gave Southampton the edge and confidence to have a go at Liverpool, as the Saints were able to capitalize through a dodgy loose ball to have Redmond strike the ball into the net from a deflection.

With the nerves running for Liverpool players, it took about 14 minutes afterwards for Liverpool to score an equalizer through Takumi Minamino whose first start in the Premier League was when he was on loan to the Saints in the 2020/21 Season.

The Reds were able to maintain their Premier League hopes and take the title race to the final day through a header that went straight in goal from Joel Matip; back to back goals in the Premier League this season.

Though the League title may not be in their hands, and is dependent on City’s results on final match day, Liverpool sure made a good season, one very much interesting for rivals, neutrals and fans.
