“Strip Obasanjo of All Traditional Titles” – Yoruba Group Tells Monarchs
The Yoruba World Congress (YWC), a socio-cultural and advocacy group representing individuals of Yoruba descent, has called upon traditional monarchs to promptly revoke all chieftaincy titles conferred upon former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Additionally, the YWC has instructed these traditional rulers to abstain from participating in any event where Obasanjo is present or has the authority to use the microphone, starting immediately.
The background for this call stems from an incident that occurred on September 15, 2023, when Obasanjo, at an event in Iseyin, Oyo State, directed some traditional rulers to stand up and sit down, resulting in public outrage.
Consequently, Obasanjo was asked to issue a public apology to these traditional rulers.
However, the Yoruba World Congress, dissatisfied with the absence of an apology from the former president, has advised traditional rulers to strip him of all traditional titles bestowed upon him without any delay.
This action is being taken in response to what the group perceives as a failure on Obasanjo’s part to extend a formal apology.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Stephen Ajayi, the YWC encourages traditional rulers not to accept invitations that are not in line with the dignity of their positions.
The group urges them to unite and speak in unison to uphold the esteemed cultural heritage and the respect it commands.
In addition to these demands, the Yoruba World Congress has called upon the National Assembly to enact legislation for the establishment of a ministry dedicated to the affairs of traditional rulers.
This move is seen as a way to further protect and promote the interests of these important cultural figures.
