Sokoto gets NUC recognition for first education varsity in the north
Shehu Shagari University of Education has now been recognized as the first recognized university by the National Universities Commission in the north.
According to a statement made on Monday by the Special Adviser, Sokoto State Governor on Media and Publicity, Muhammad Bello, the National Universities Commission has now acknowledged the presence of the institution.
As an upgrade from the former name of the university “Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto” the Aminu Waziri Tambuwal administration will now focus primarily on combining theoretical and functional education as a requisite to its new “University” status.
Prof. Abubakar Rasheed who is the Executive Secretary of the NUC, in his presentation of the letter of recognition to Tambuwal in Abuja, praised the governor’s efforts toward development of education in the state.
“Prior to the visit, the NUC has looked at the antecedents of the SSCOE vis-à-vis the outstanding credentials of Governor Tambuwal in the area of education development, particularly, tertiary education; and gladly present to you a letter of recognition of the SSUE as the 58th state university in the country and first of its type in Northern Nigeria, in addition to being the fourth in such category in the country,” Rasheed pointed out.
Before the presentation of the strategic documents for the University, Tambuwal remarked that, the need to increase the workforce in the state’s education sector brought about the upgrade of the institution.
In his assuring statement to the NUC, the governor said that the state government and the university will henceforth follow its rules. Tambuwal emphasized that all requisites ensuring smooth commencement of the university had been completed.
Sighing in hope, he said the university will address the necessary human resource needed in Sokoto and other areas of the state.
“The university will go a long way in addressing the human resources gap and benefit the people of the state and its catchment areas,” Tambuwal purported.
