Rivers LG election: Asari Dokubo urges peaceful transition

Former Niger Delta agitator Asari Dokubo visited Governor Siminialayi Fubara at the Port Harcourt Government House on Monday, emphasizing the need for a smooth transition in the Rivers LG election.

Dokubo stressed that “only one man can be governor of Rivers State at a time,” asserting the state’s unity above individual interests.

“We will not have two governors. Rivers State is bigger than any individual. No one can take the people of Rivers State for granted,” Dokubo stated firmly.

Dokubo’s visit follows tensions surrounding the tenure of outgoing local government chairmen. He urged them to peacefully vacate their offices, citing the expiration of their tenure.

According to Dokubo, their actions should align with constitutional provisions, and any attempt to extend their tenure would undermine stability in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Dokubo cautioned against political manipulation of youths and highlighted the absence of many politicians’ children from public protests.

He underscored the importance of respecting democratic processes and avoiding unrest that could disrupt public order.

The former agitator noted instances where local youths had occupied council secretariats, asserting their right to ensure accountability and transparency.

Dokubo encouraged adherence to legal frameworks and urged authorities to conduct elections promptly to uphold democratic principles in Rivers State.
