The House of Representatives has declared that it will, within ten days, probe the factors responsible for the decision of the Federal Government to ban Twitter in Nigeria and the laws upon which the action was based.

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, in his opening speech at the plenary on Tuesday, stated that the social media platform had become a vast communication tool and platform for enterprise particularly for the populous youth in the nation.

Gbajabiamila further said that the lawmakers had been overwhelmed with protests and demands for intervention by the parliament.

The Speaker, however, disclosed that the House also needs to hear from the government, particularly the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who issued the order suspending the social media application in the nation.

Gbajabiamila, thus, directed the relevant committees of the House to invite Mohammed to clarify the decision by the government and the reasons and bases for it.

The committees, which he requested to begin work straight away, are to report back within ten days.
