House of Reps member survives fatal car crash

A potentially fatal accident on the Ekpoma-Abuja Highway was narrowly escaped by House of Representatives member, Marcus Onobun.

The former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and representative for Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency, sustained injuries during the harrowing incident and has been admitted to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, Tony Aziegbemi, confirmed the news to correspondents on Friday. He revealed that Onobun’s condition was stable, despite the fractures he sustained in various parts of his body. The immediate past Speaker was coherent and responsive during Aziegbemi’s visit to the hospital on Thursday, offering insight into the accident.

The accident occurred on Wednesday when the vehicle carrying Marcus Onobun veered off the road and fell into a ditch along the Ekpoma-Abuja Highway. The impact of the collision left the dark-brown Mitsubishi SUV severely damaged, with the airbag system detached, the windshield shattered, and the roof disfigured.

While the specific cause of the accident is yet to be fully determined, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.

Tony Aziegbemi expressed relief that Onobun’s injuries, though serious, were not life-threatening. He conveyed his well-wishes for a swift recovery, emphasizing the representative’s commitment to serving his constituents and contributing to the development of the region.

“I can confirm to you that he had an accident on Wednesday and he had fractures in some parts of his body but he is responding and not in critical condition,” stated Aziegbemi.

“When I visited him on Thursday, we spoke, and he even told me how the incident happened. I wish him a quick recovery so that he can get back on his feet and contribute to the development of his people as he has always done.”
