NLC president Joe Ajaero returns after police summons

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has returned to the Labour House following his appearance at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Ajaero reported to the police on Thursday morning in response to a summons related to allegations of terrorism financing.

Accompanied by prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, and other supporters, Ajaero addressed journalists after his meeting with the police.

He affirmed the NLC’s unwavering support for Nigeria throughout its history, including during the colonial and military periods.

“We are more patriotic than any other institution in this country,” Joe Ajaero said.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the labour movement and stressed its commitment to advocating for the implementation of the minimum wage, which has been legislated but not yet enforced.

The police investigation also encompasses allegations of cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. This comes in the wake of a recent raid on the NLC national secretariat, where authorities sought materials related to nationwide protests against hunger and poor governance.

In response to the summons, labour leaders mobilized union members and prepared for potential protests across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The NLC National Executive Council condemned the allegations as baseless and criticized the short notice for Ajaero’s police appearance.

The situation is developing, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
