NLC demands immediate release of president Joe Ajaero

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is scheduled to appear before police today, August 29, 2024, in connection with allegations of terrorism financing.

The summons has sparked a wave of tension and prompted the NLC to mobilize its members for a nationwide show of support.

The NLC, through a notice issued by General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, has instructed affiliates and state councils to gather in Abuja and across Nigeria to demonstrate solidarity with Joe Ajaero.

The organization’s call for action reflects its view that the charges against Ajaero are politically motivated and aimed at undermining the labor movement.

Ajaero’s legal team, led by Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, successfully secured a postponement of the initial August 20 summons to today, citing scheduling conflicts.

The police summons follows a recent raid on the NLC headquarters, where authorities were reportedly searching for materials linked to the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.

Ajaero’s interrogation comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of labor leaders and their role in advocating for systemic change.
