Nigeria’s first female VC dies

Grace Alele-Williams, who was the first Nigerian woman to receive a doctoral degree, has died on Friday, March 25.

 

Reports by TopNaija.ng revealed that, the mathematics professor, finished from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), making it the first university to produce a female Vice Chancellor.

 

Prof. Alele-Williams was born in Warri, Delta state. She attended Government School, Warri; Queen’s College, Lagos and the University College of Ibadan (now University of Ibadan).

 

The 89 year-old woman bagged her master’s degree in mathematics as a teacher at Queen’s School, Ede, Osun State in 1957 and her PhD degree in mathematics education at the University of Chicago (U.S.) in 1963.

 

Her appointment as the vice-chancellor of the prestigious University of Benin, happened in 1985.

 

Arrangements for her burial will later be announced by her family.
