Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko advocates citizen gun rights

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, recently voiced strong support for Nigerian citizen gun rights, arguing that self-defence could be crucial in light of rising security challenges across the nation.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Nwoko shared his perspective on Nigeria’s security crisis, underscoring his belief that enabling citizens to arm themselves could serve as a practical deterrent against crime.

When asked if allowing citizens to carry guns would effectively address security issues, Nwoko responded confidently, “Yes, it will.”

He recounted a personal tragedy that shaped his stance: the death of his Senior Legislative Aide during an attack by gunmen at his Abuja home last November.

Describing the ordeal, Nwoko said, “My SLA was killed…when the kidnappers got to their door, his wife and kids hid under the bed. They took him, and he was never seen again.”

According to Nwoko, arming residents could discourage such audacious criminal acts. “If residents had guns, do you think the kidnappers would knock from house to house?” he asked.

Nwoko also expressed frustration over unmet local expectations, explaining that he faces increasing pressure from his constituents who feel state leaders aren’t addressing public needs adequately.

“I’m under pressure from my people,” he stated, adding that ongoing debt payments shouldn’t be an excuse for not delivering on essential services. He also called on the Federal Government to restrict the import of refined products to protect local refineries, which he sees as vital to strengthening the economy.

Nwoko’s comments highlight an urgent call for security reform, economic policy changes, and self-defence rights as Nigerian citizens and leaders seek solutions to pressing challenges.
