Nigeria police trust fund act: Minister launches committee to review

The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has inaugurated a 24-man committee to improve the governance and effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF).

The committee is headed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, with the primary mandate to review the NPTF Act of 2019 and identify areas necessitating amendment.

Minister Gaidam underscored the importance of this initiative, emphasizing the NPTF’s considerable impact on Nigeria’s policing sector since its establishment during the inauguration ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday.

He highlighted several key areas of concern that warrant scrutiny, including the composition and function of the Board of Trustees, management procedures, contractual agreements, limitations on the board’s authority, and funding mechanisms.

Addressing the committee, Minister Gaidam urged members to meticulously assess the existing Act, pinpointing areas requiring modification, and provide sound justifications for proposed changes. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive review, urging the committee to draw insights from global best practices and engage with relevant stakeholders for informed recommendations.

The committee comprises representatives from the Ministry of Police Affairs, NPTF, Nigeria Police Force, and the Ministry of Justice. Given the critical nature of their task, they have been granted a two-week timeframe to compile their findings and present their recommendations to the ministry’s management.

This proactive move by the Ministry of Police Affairs reflects a commitment to enhancing the operational efficiency and governance framework of the NPTF, ultimately aiming to bolster the nation’s law enforcement capabilities and ensure optimal utilization of resources for the betterment of Nigeria’s security landscape.
