President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, has made a significant move towards humanizing the Nigerian Police Force by designating April 7 as National Police Day.

This announcement was made during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, highlighting the administration’s commitment to recognizing the sacrifices and dedication of police officers nationwide.

President Tinubu underscored the need for a fundamental overhaul of institutional mentality and memory within the police force, emphasizing the transformation of the force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution.

This initiative aligns with ongoing reforms initiated since the administration took office in 2023, focusing on investments in training, capacity-building, and upgrading equipment and technology.

During the ceremony, President Tinubu delivered a poignant statement, emphasizing that the administration does not view police officers as mere robots.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in our tradition of honouring the Police Force in the life of this great nation, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week.

“Furthermore, the last day of the week, the April 7th, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria.

“Tonight, I must remind you that we don’t see you as just the shields of the nation, we don’t see you as robots.

“This is why we are here; we are here to humanise you.” he said.

This declaration reflects the administration’s commitment to humanizing law enforcement and acknowledging the individuality and humanity of police officers.

The decision to designate April 7 as National Police Day represents a broader effort to honor the courage and commitment of police officers serving on the front lines of national security.

It signifies a step towards humanizing law enforcement in Nigeria and recognizing the sacrifices made by officers to maintain peace and order in communities across the country.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for recognizing the hard work and resilience of police officers.

He emphasized the importance of celebrating the nation’s unsung heroes and expressed optimism that these initiatives would contribute to building a more compassionate and effective police force.

The ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja brought together government officials, police leadership, and stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of the Nigerian Police Force.

It served as a platform to highlight the administration’s commitment to transforming law enforcement and fostering a culture of professionalism and accountability within the force.

Moving forward, the designation of April 7 as National Police Day is expected to become an annual commemoration, providing an opportunity for the nation to express gratitude to police officers for their service and sacrifices.

It underscores the administration’s recognition of the vital role played by law enforcement in safeguarding communities and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.
