Mahrick Initiative organizes community outreach to empower young schoolgirls

In a heartwarming display of compassion and service, Rotarian Princess Olufumilayo Okusanya, founder of Mahrick Initiative, marked her birthday by giving back to the community through a collaborative outreach program at Abeokuta Girls’ Grammar School (AGGS) on Tuesday and empowered young girls with essential resources and motivational talks.
A Birthday with a Purpose
Speaking about her decision to celebrate by giving back, Okusanya shared, “It feels wonderful. My love language is service, and I am passionate about supporting the less privileged and engaging in humanitarian efforts.”
Rtn. Okusanya has continued to extend support to the underprivileged through Mahrick Initiative, a non-profit organization, ensuring that those in need receive the necessary assistance and education.
Inspiration Behind Mahrick Initiative
Rtn. Okusanya attributed her passion for humanitarian work to her upbringing, revealing that her parents instilled in her the values of compassion and service.
“It’s something I was born into and grew up with. And to God be the glory, we don’t just focus on young girls but extend our outreach to the larger community,” she explained.

The event was particularly memorable, with an enthusiastic turnout of students eager to learn and benefit from the program.
“The girls were so motivated and excited. They were attentive to the speakers and appreciated what we did,” Okusanya recalled.
The appreciation extended beyond the event. Students continued waving and expressing their gratitude long after the outreach had concluded.
Key Highlights and Expert Contributions
The outreach featured an educational session on menstrual hygiene, led by Dr Adebusola Okedele, CEO of Teen Girls Enlightenment Initiative, and Rotarian Naomi Abisoye-Babalola the president-elect of Rotary Club of Olumo-Sunrise. They demonstrated the proper usage of both disposable and reusable sanitary pads, emphasizing the importance of hygiene.
Rtn. Adetonike Kazeem, President of the Rotary Club of Abeokuta Royal, also delivered an inspiring motivational session, encouraging the girls to strive for success without limitations.
A crucial aspect of the program was the donation of over 600 sanitary towels to the students, ensuring that young girls have access to menstrual hygiene products.
This initiative aimed to break barriers associated with menstrual health and provide a sense of dignity and empowerment.

Addressing Child Abuse and Self-Defense
A significant part of the discussion also touched on child abuse, an issue prevalent in society.
Rtn. Adetonike provided insights into recognizing and speaking out against abuse, urging students to confide in trusted individuals and seek help when necessary. se also discussed self-defense techniques emphasising talking to attract attention when in danger.
Support and Partnerships
The success of the outreach was made possible through collaborations with organizations such as LifeGates Humanitarian Foundation, Rotary Club of Olumo Sunrise, Muinat Aduke Abisoye Babalola Foundation, Sunrise Suites and the National Youth Council of Nigeria. Rtn. Okusanya emphasized the importance of partnerships, noting that the initiative thrives on support from volunteers and organizations.
Message to Young Girls
Closing the event with a message to the girls, Rtn. Naomi urged them to never place limits on their aspirations.
“A girl child should see herself as limitless. You can be whoever you want to be. Speak out against any form of abuse, and always strive to be enterprising,” she encouraged.
Past Assistant Governor Adewale Azeez of the Rotary Club of Abeokuta also echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of educating and empowering young girls.
“Educating a girl child is educating an entire community,” he remarked.
A Call for Continued Support
Rtn. Okusanya invited individuals and organizations to support Mahrick Initiative through volunteering and referrals to other supporters.
“Every act of service counts, and together, we can create a better future for our young generation,” she said.
The birthday outreach was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on the young girls of Abeokuta Girls’ Grammar School.
