Julius Berger hands over second-Niger Bridge project

The Second Niger Bridge, a monumental infrastructure project, has been officially handed over to the Federal Government by the construction company, Julius Berger, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s infrastructure development.

This transfer of ownership occurred seven months after its inauguration by the previous administration.

Inspecting the completed project, the Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, expressed his satisfaction with the work accomplished. He praised both the previous and present administrations for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition, lauding the completed bridge as “impeccable, very beautiful, and well done.”

Umahi highlighted plans to address lighting concerns on the bridge, outlining strategies to implement a sustainable solution, particularly during nighttime. He revealed intentions to deploy solar power in the upcoming weeks to minimize reliance on diesel, ensuring consistent lighting.

Moreover, the minister emphasized forthcoming developments associated with the project, including the completion of two interchanges aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Asaba and Onitsha.

Umahi also mentioned plans to create additional amenities such as service stations, restaurants, and supermarkets, envisioning a modernized infrastructure similar to those in developed nations.

Security measures for the bridge were also addressed by Umahi, assuring the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and the deployment of security personnel for prompt assistance within a five-minute timeframe.

Dr. Lars Richter, Managing Director of Julius Berger, described the event as a technical handover following the project’s inauguration by the previous administration.

He affirmed that Julius Berger had successfully completed the work on time, delivering the highest standards of quality.

Mr. Bede Obioha, Director of Bridges Design and Construction (South) at the Federal Ministry of Works, urged local residents to safeguard the installed facilities and those yet to be implemented. Commending the ministry’s staff and contractors for their exceptional work, he urged road users to adhere to traffic regulations for safe usage of the bridge.
