JAMB approves free registration for Handicapped candidates
In a move towards inclusivity, the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has declared that Persons Living With Disability (PLWD) aiming to take the 2024/2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can now register at no cost.
Revealing the registration process nationwide, JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede shared the news, emphasizing the board’s commitment to supporting candidates with disabilities.
He disclosed that free application documents would be provided to all categories of PLWD as part of this initiative.
“To support the PLWD, JAMB will issue free application documents to all categories of Persons Living with Disabilities in the advertisement for the 2024 UTME/DE,” Oloyede stated.
Ensuring a seamless process for all candidates, Oloyede mentioned that audio books would be made available for blind candidates. This move represents a digital adaptation of traditional reading materials, with audio formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA compatible with various devices capable of streaming audio records.
The registrar highlighted that the idea for providing audiobooks originated from the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.
In addition to blind candidates, other groups benefiting from the free registration include individuals with Down syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
“The following categories of candidates will now be listed under the disability group: Down syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),” Oloyede confirmed.
