INEC Releases Timetable, Schedule Of Activities For Bye-elections, Re-run Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued the calendar and program of operations for holding bye-elections after the resignation or death of National and State Houses of Assembly members.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said this in an Abuja statement on Friday.

These vacancies, according to Olumekun, were announced by Presiding Officers such as the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Speaker of State Houses of Assembly.

He went on to say that the vacancies happened in two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies covering nine Federation states.

In addition, Olumekun said that the Commission is conducting re-run elections coming from the 2023 General Election as instructed by different Election Petition Appeal Tribunals.

He observed that these court-ordered elections presently touch 35 seats, with three covering full constituency and others involving just a few voting units.

According to an INEC spokeswoman, both types of elections would be held concurrently in all impacted seats on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

He stated that the election timetable, as well as detailed delimitation data such as registration areas, polling unit names, and the number of registered voters and PVCs collected, had been uploaded to our website and social media platforms to guide political parties and candidates, as well as for public information.

As a result, Olumekun advised parties and candidates to rigorously stick to the set schedules in order for these elections to run smoothly.
