Is it no longer news that the rate of unemployment in Nigeria increases daily while young people remain highest in the ratio and analysis.

Generically, there are various things that can be done to make money as a youth but most people only want quick money which is truly dangerous. There are practical steps on how to battle unemployment.

Firstly, you need to tell people that you think can help out with the situation either by referring you to an opportunity or giving you the opportunity. Also, you should inform people that are employed so that you would be priority once there is a vacancy at their place of employment. Never feel shy to tell people of your need for a job. Just as the saying goes; a closed mouth is a closed destiny.
Secondly, you need to visit online job sites and career sites daily to search for job vacancies and apply. In this case, it is best to be discreet, know your area of interest and focus strongly on it. It would help you to not be distracted easily and have a direction.

Thirdly, learn a skill either virtually/online or do a physical training. Develop yourself on a skill, a talent or a hobby. This would be very useful while you wait for a job and can be put to use to gain self-employment.
During this period of unemployment, it can be very depressing and challenging

but you must not relent or quit. You must ensure consistency and persistency. In the end, you will get an employment offer.

So how do we end unemployment in simple terms?

  1. OVERHAUL THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM
We must re-design our curriculum to meet modern needs. The new curriculum should replace irrelevant subjects with ones that teach contemporary skills such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, information literacy, independent research, leadership, and digital literacy. It should focus on the practical aspect of learning; motivate students to learn; change final year projects from an avenue to display theoretical knowledge to a chance to practice problem-solving. This alone should be the first step for anyone trying to address the unemployment crisis in Nigeria.

  2. SUPPORT ENTREPRENEURSHIP
I have seen enough of my fellow young Nigerians to know that many will succeed as entrepreneurs if supported financially by the government. Many young Nigerians have viable business ideas but face the challenge of capital. Thanks to the Tony Elumelu Foundation and a host of other NGOs that have funded business proposals young people have been able to create more job opportunities for their peers. The government should follow suit by making more capital available to prospective business owners, whether as grants or interest-free loans.
