Curfew in Bayelsa as Duoye Diri is inaugurated Governor [PHOTOS]
Nigerian police have imposed a three-day dusk to dawn curfew in Bayelsa state over widespread violence as a result of the sacking of David Lyon, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the March election, as governor-elect.
Amid the chaos, supporters of the APC had trooped to the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital on Friday morning, chanting “No Lyon, no governor”.
They also blocked major roads and lit bonfires. Some aggrieved protesters had broken into the Yenagoa residence of Duoye Diri, the whom INEC has declared governor-elect, vandalising several cars.
Recall that the supreme court had annulled Lyon’s victory in the election on the grounds that Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, his running mate, presented forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
David Lyon, Diri’s All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, was preparing for inauguration on Thursday when the supreme court sacked him on the grounds that Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, his running mate, presented forged certificates to INEC.
Following the ruling, INEC issued a certificate of return to Diri in Abuja, on Friday and he flew back to Yenagoa to take over from Seriake Dickson, the immediate past governor, whose tenure ended on Friday.
Aggrieved protesters had trooped to the streets, especially in Yenagoa, to express dissatisfaction with the supreme court ruling.
They lit bonfires, blocked major roads and also invaded the residences of Dickson and the new governor, where they destroyed many vehicles.
Shortly after this, the police imposed a curfew in the state.
Diri is the fifth civilian governor of Bayelsa.
