Central Bank delays payment of Super Eagles wages
In a setback for the Nigerian football contingent, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing delays in receiving the approved funds earmarked for the payment of the Super Eagles’ bonuses and allowances at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the Federal Government’s prior approval of the allocated funds, the NFF has reportedly not yet received any payment from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This development has left the players and coaching staff awaiting their due compensation as they continue to compete in the prestigious tournament.
According to reliable sources, each Super Eagles player is entitled to a $5,000 bonus for a victory, with a daily camp allowance of $200 per player. Notably, the players are owed a total of $12,500 each for the two wins and a draw secured during the group stage of the competition.
As the Super Eagles gear up for a crucial Round of 16 clash against perennial rivals Cameroon at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday, concerns over the delayed payment of bonuses and allowances have added an unwelcome distraction to the team’s preparations.
The NFF has yet to provide a statement regarding the reasons behind the delay, and the players and coaching staff are anxiously awaiting the resolution of this matter, hoping for a swift disbursement of the funds approved by the government.
The delay in receiving their entitlements has raised questions about the impact it may have on the team’s morale and focus as they face a formidable opponent in the knockout stage of the AFCON 2023 tournament.
