Captain Brick wall: Virgil van Dijk reacts to being Liverpool captain

The cat is out of the bag, Liverpool has officially confirmed its captain ahead of the new premier league season as Virgil van Dijk emerges the next player to officially wear the armband.

The Dutchman was officially confirmed as the new captain of Liverpool FC, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold as vice-captain on Monday evening after the club manager, Jurgen Klopp hinted at the news earlier in a press conference prior to the pre-season fixture against Leicester City.

The Centre-back who also holds the same role for his country, the Netherlands and will take over the full-time occupancy of the armband following the departure of Jordan Henderson from Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold will also take over the Vice Captaincy following the exit of James Milner.

On being confirmed as captain, Virgil van Dijk said in reaction to the news;

“[It’s] a really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling and I can’t really describe it at this point. But it’s something that I’m really, really proud of.

“Obviously I’m captain of Holland, that was already such a huge honour, a proud moment as well. But also to be the captain of Liverpool Football Club is something that I can’t describe at this point.

“It’s just something that makes me very proud and I will do everything in my power and what I can do to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club.”

Virgil Van Dijk already has 222 appearances for Liverpool since moving to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, during which time, the Netherlands captain has collected 7 silverwares that includes the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the FA Community Shield.

On the previous campaign and ahead of the first premier league fixture versus Chelsea, Virgil van Dijk said to the club media;
“Like I said before, it hurts a lot the kind of season we had last year compared to the seasons we had before and the successes we’ve had.
“But now we start from scratch – Chelsea away is going to be a very tough one, first league game. We want to show not only to ourselves but to the supporters and to the world that we are going to be back and we feel like we will be.”

“I’ll do everything in my power as captain to make everyone proud,” the Captain promises.
