85 militants killed in Boko Haram-ISWAP clashes in Borno

In Borno State, a new wave of violent confrontations between Boko Haram and the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) has left a grim toll, with at least 85 militants reported dead.

Counter-insurgency expert and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, disclosed that the clashes, marked by escalating tensions, occurred between April 24 and 25, 2024.

As a consequence of the intense fighting, Boko Haram’s foothold on several islands previously seized from ISWAP has been forcibly relinquished.

Makama’s revelations shed light on ISWAP’s strategic manoeuvres, including reinforcement of fighters and targeted assaults on Boko Haram strongholds in Tudun ShawakkiI, Tumbum Bakwarram, Mallam Basiru, Kwaleram, Kandahar, and Tumbum Ali Island.

The clash culminated in ISWAP’s victory, resulting in the deaths of over 70 Boko Haram militants and the capture of several others.

With the conflict escalating, Makama underscores the urgent need for government security forces to intervene decisively and restore peace to the volatile Lake Chad Basin region.
