NIMC calls on citizens to report corruption among staff

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has requested citizens to report any form of extortion and inimical practices among its staff via official platforms or by lodging complaints through its website.

According to a statement by NIMC, tagged ‘NIMC kicks against extortion and other vices’, endorsed by its Head, Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, reaffirmed its zero-tolerance to corruption, fraudulent activities, and extortion in the enrolment process and other activities.

The statement read, “The NIMC has instituted effective systems and supervisory checks to counter actions that stand at variance with the Commissions’ corporate ethical standards.”

The commission further urged the general public to refrain from being enablers of extortion as it would not tolerate any act capable of tarnishing its integrity.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is a statutory Nigerian organization that operates the country’s national identity management systems.

The commission was established by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007 and established to create, operate and manage Nigeria’s national identity card database.

It also integrates the existing identity database in government institutions, registers individuals and legal residents, assigns a unique national identification number and introduces general multi-purpose cards.

The National Identification Number is a part of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System (NIMS); the other part is the General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).

The number stores an individual’s unique data into the database. It is part of a measure to create a national identity database and to prevent both double identity and identity fraud.

NIMC began enrollment exercise in September 2010 and started the issuance of a multipurpose card in 2013.

The identity card issued in 2013 can be obtained by Nigerians aged sixteen or have lived in the country for two or more years at the point of enrollment providing an identification document with a photograph such as a driver’s license or an international passport.

Engr. Aliyu Abubakar Aziz is the current Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
