60 or more missing as boat capsize in Mozambique

Over 60 people, mostly children, are reportedly missing after the boat they were travelling on capsized off Mozambique’s coast.

According to Radio Mozambique, the ship which reportedly left Nacala port at 15:30 local time on Thursday for Memba district in northern Nampula province was carrying people and goods.

The accident was believed to have been caused by bad weather which affected the region on Thursday afternoon.

The incident was confirmed last night by Memba district police commander, Manuela Parula who was notified of the accident by community leaders. noting that the accident area had a weak communication signal that delayed getting the details.

Reports say 17 of the people who were on board survived by swimming ashore while a search and rescue team is currently underway with the police, a team of health personnel and local leaders on standby.
