Published

on

We all woke up to the news of  move by California to break away from the United States which has coined the name ‘Calexit’. Knowing fully what the leaders of my dear Biafran families are passing through, i decided to check to see other places in the world where there are secessionist, and i was surprised to see quiet alot. Though some are no longer active, but time will tell if the agitation will be back or not.

CATALONIA, Spain

This political movement started in 1922, by Francesco Marcia, it was then made an autonomous community within Spain.

This region located in Spain is made up of four provinces, Barcelona, girona, lleida and taragona, with its own distinctive langauge and culture.
The Catalan independence movement seeks for the independence of Catalonia from spain due partially to economic issues. The modern independence movement began when the 2006 statute of Autonomy was challenged in the Spanish high court of justice. Protest against the challenge, rolled out to become demands for independence.
Some parties and personalties in Catalonia are opposed to the idea of independence,. The official position as of 2015 is that the Spanish constitution should be reformed to favour Catalonia better.

VENICE, Italy
A city In italy , among 117 islands separated by canals and linked by bridges is the capital of the Veneto region( one of the 20 regions of Italy), Venetist culture ,language and tradition are different from italy and dont like Veneto being in Italy, they refuse the validity of Veneto being united with Italy in 1866.
Political parties in Veneto, have long proposed a  calling for the referendum to be edited, some want an autonomy , while some wants Independence for  Veneto.
In December 2016, a bill was approved to recognize Venetians as a national minority.

BIAFRA. Nigeria
A secessionist state in Nigeria, majorly made up of the Igbos and other minority ethnic groups.

Biafran territory ( name gotten from the ‘ Bight of Biafra’) existed before the amalgamation of Nigeria. Its agitation which was caused by economic, ethnic, religious tensions(with a lot of Igbos being killed in the North) which still exists till today, was  led by Odumegwu Ojukwu, started in 1967 , paved way for the Nigerian civil war, which lasted for 2 and a half year before the Biafrans surrendered.
Some African countries and Haiti recognized the state ,some nations provided support(Israel, France, Spain ,Portugal, Norway, Vatican City), and some Christian Organizations
Modern move for the realization of Biafra is led by MASSOB ( Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra ) and IPOB (Indigenous People Of Biafra).

QUEBEC, Canada
A French speaking region in Canada, most secessionist say that preserving Quebec’s cultural heritage is important.

The idea was first brought up by Honors Mercier in the 1890’s due to the long division between the English speaking majority and French speaking minority.                                                                                                    Support for Quebec’s independence grew over the years with Alliance Laurentinne Founded in 1957 being the first organization dedicated to the independence. When colonized countries like Algeria, Congo got their independence, many thought Quebec would be next line, unfortunately it was not so, as the Canadian Government did not pave way for that. Though only about 40% of Quebeckers support an independent country, groups have continued to spring up towards the gain of independence.

MOMBASA, Kenya
Its the coast province of Kenya.
It is believed that people of the coast province are being marginalized by governments in Kenya. It was formed in 1999 and traces its secession claims to 1895 and 1963 agreements on the coastline, which has being termed bribery by the British to the government of kenya because there was no consent of the coastal stake holders, and Kenya had always discrinated against the people of the coastal province. It was dormant until 2008. In 2014, the leader of the group  Omar Mwamnuadzi was charged.
