Xi Jinping Set To Break Traditional Two-term Limit In China

Published

on

Xi Jinping has secured his third five-year term as China’s president, breaking the traditional two-term limit.

The National People’s Congress, China’s largely ceremonial parliament, voted unanimously for Xi after the constitution was changed to remove the limit.

The election process remains shrouded in secrecy, with no candidate lists distributed, and Xi and others believed to have run unopposed.

Xi has filled the party with his supporters and sidelined potential challengers, making him China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.

The country is currently dealing with the economic fallout from its zero-COVID policy and a tense relationship with the United States.
