Winning The World Cup Changes Nothing—McCoist On GOAT debate
The GOAT debate has over the years been responsible for many online conflicts and controversies as a divide between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has been created by narratives driven by the media, but for a certain pundit, Ally McCoist, Lionel Messi winning the world cup changes nothing in the debate.
For the former Rangers player, he believes one man stands as the GOAT in football, something, not even the years nor Lionel Messi can take from him even if he were to prove victorious in lifting the world cup trophy in Qatar.
Ally McCoist, a former legend of Scotland and Rangers, has informed Lionel Messi that Diego Maradona will remain the best player of all time even if he wins the World Cup in Qatar.
Even if Messi wins the most coveted football prize, in his opinion, he cannot be compared to Maradona when it comes to the GOAT category.
The 35-year-old was in outstanding form for Argentina on Tuesday as they easily defeated Croatia in the semi-finals. He is one match away from winning the World Cup.
For their names to appear on the renowned trophy, Messi must now defeat either France or Morocco.
Because of how different football was in the 1980s compared to today, in McCoist’s opinion, there is simply no way the two players can be compared.
Speaking on talkSPORT Andy Townsend asked:
“Would winning this World Cup settle that debate?”
And McCoist responded: “No, no. Not for me. I think that Maradona just about won one by himself and it’s just impossible to compare them.
“Is Messi one of the most gifted players ever? Absolutely. He’s one of the most gifted footballers that I’ve ever seen.
“But Messi and Maradona are incomparable because they played in a different era. They almost played in a different sport!”
