Why Mohammed Kudus is not a Chelsea player

Mohammed Kudus to Chelsea was a widely talked about move in the summer transfer window, until it never happened, and surprisingly the Ghanaian made the shocking move to West Ham United, another London team.

Speaking on the move and revealing insights into the behind-the-scenes negotiations, agent, Jennifer Mendelwitsch reveals Chelsea were not keen on signing Mohammed Kudus in the first place.

According to Mendelwitsch, the West-London side made a ridiculous offer to Kudus’ former club, Ajax that broke the deal before it had even gotten through.

Mohammed Kudus had been in exceptional form during his time at Ajax between 2020 and 2023, drawing significant attention from European powerhouses, particularly during the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old Ghanaian international’s performances as an attacking midfielder had earned him a coveted spot on the radar of top European clubs.

Chelsea, in their quest to reinforce their midfield, were heavily linked with Kudus in the last transfer window.

The move, though eagerly anticipated, failed to materialize, and instead, Kudus made a significant move to West Ham United, transferring for a substantial fee of €43 million on August 27, 2023.

Since donning the West Ham United shirt, Kudus has continued to impress, notching up six goals and providing one assist in just 11 appearances across all competitions.

Notably, his performance has outshone that of Chelsea’s new midfielder, Moisés Caicedo, for whom the Blues shelled out a Premier League record fee of €116 million.

In an interview with RMC Sport, Mohammed Kudus’ agent, Jennifer Mendelewitsch, revealed;

Why Mohammed Kudus is not a Chelsea player

“We agreed on a contract with Chelsea, but the deal didn’t happen.”

“Kudus talked with the coach but in the end, it didn’t happen because Chelsea made a ridiculous offer to Ajax.”

“There was no counter-offer. Chelsea did this to lots of players this summer.”

She also alluded to Chelsea’s considerable focus on the high-profile transfer of Moisés Caicedo, which may have influenced their approach to other potential deals.

“They did with very low offers knowing they wouldn’t be accepted. The truth is that they were completely taken by the transfer of Caicedo.”
