Why I left Liverpool — Jordan Henderson
Former Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson has opened up on his decision to leave Liverpool and embark on a new chapter with Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq.
The midfielder recently joined the ranks of renowned players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, former teammates Sadio Mane, Fabinho and Firmino as well as Karim Benzema in the Middle East, cites his former teammate Steven Gerrard as a pivotal factor in his transition.
Jordan Henderson, who secured a lucrative contract to make the leap from the Premier League to the Saudi Pro League, emphasized that Gerrard played a substantial role in his move to Al Ettifaq.
Their shared history at Liverpool has been a decisive influence on Henderson’s journey to Al Ettifaq.
“Stevie was a big reason obviously why I came. To work with him and play under him,” He said regarding the move.
As Al Ettifaq readies to launch their 2023/24 Saudi Pro League campaign, Henderson remains confident in their preparations for the upcoming season.
Their first encounter, scheduled for August 14, will see them face off against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr, who have recently welcomed former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane into their ranks.
“We need to be ready in the first week or so for the first game, but I’m sure we will be. We’ve had some good training sessions,” Henderson affirmed, expressing optimism in the team’s progress.
The 33-year-old, boasting an impressive record of 77 international caps, also discussed his aspirations regarding a return to the England national team.
“I’m focused on playing for Ettifaq and playing my best. If I’m doing that then there’s no reason why I can’t play for England, as the gaffer said,” the England international asserted.
“Obviously we spoke over the last few weeks about it because playing for England means a lot to me and I feel as though I can still bring a lot to the team as I have in the last few games in the World Cup.
“So I still feel as though I can bring a lot. But at the same time I’ve got to do my job here and if I can do that then hopefully I can make the team as normal.”
