Why I accepted pay cut to stay as Super Eagles coach — Peseiro
Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has disclosed the reason behind him taking a pay cut following a lengthy contract debacle with the Nigerian Football Federation.
According to the Portuguese, accepting a reduced salary offer was due to being persuaded by the Super Eagles players.
The decision which was made earlier this summer, allows Peseiro to continue leading the national team in their pursuit of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, scheduled for January.
Hailing from Portugal, the 63-year-old tactician has an extensive coaching background, having previously managed the national teams of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
His commitment to the Super Eagles was cemented when he decided to embrace a pay cut, a gesture that could prove to be crucial for the Nigerian national team.
Jose Peseiro revealed that it was the unwavering belief and determination of his players that prompted him to remain at the helm.
He shared his players’ sentiments, stating,
“The players pushed me to stay because they believe we can win (the AFCON). We can win it. The players know it. They come with the same energy, the same belief, to fight for the Super Eagles.”
Drawn into Group A, they will face formidable opponents, including the tournament’s hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, as well as Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
