What Liverpool had secretly tried to do on transfer deadline day

The summer transfer window may have been mixed for Liverpool following its conclusion, but the Merseyside Reds were surely up to no good on deadline day.

In a report that has stolen its way to the headlines, Liverpool had worked secretly under the covers of the dark to pry Newcastle midfielder, Bruno Guimaraes from the Magpies in the final hours of the summer window.

It is reported that the Reds had made an audacious bid to steal the player away from Saint James’ Park to scare the Magpies.

The move comes as Liverpool’s midfield underwent a major transformation, with key departures such as James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, and Fabinho leaving Anfield.

In an effort to swiftly bolster midfield options, Liverpool brought into the squad the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch, who was himself a deadline day signing.

However, the Reds were not content with these acquisitions and sought to further fortify their ranks by pursuing Bruno Guimaraes.

Spanish outlet AS brings up the report that Liverpool instigated a staggering £100 million bid for the Brazilian midfielder in the dying embers of the transfer window.

This eye-watering offer was promptly rebuffed by Newcastle United, where Guimaraes had established himself as a fan favorite while contributing to the club’s impressive fourth-place finish in the previous season.

The report goes on to suggest that despite the initial rejection, Liverpool remains determined to secure Guimaraes’ signature, with the player’s name reportedly “listed in ‘red'” on their future targets list. The Merseyside club believes that an opportunity to sign him could arise as early as the January transfer window, with Newcastle now on the position where they need to act quickly.

The move has prompted Newcastle United into action, as they are keen to ward off Liverpool’s potential advances by extending Guimaraes’ contract at St James’ Park.

Negotiations have been ongoing, and the latest update from renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano indicates significant progress.

Romano tweeted on Friday,

“Newcastle has made significant progress in negotiations to extend Bruno Guimaraes’ contract, with an agreement now on the verge of being completed. Positive secret talks took place over the last 10 days, with final details to iron out before the signing of Bruno’s new deal, which is close.”
