2 defenders out as Liverpool set for major shake-up

The silence of Liverpool this transfer window has been somewhat trouble for fans of the club and the recent pre-season defeat to Preston North End was even more concerning for fans.

However, more drama seems to have been stirred as the Reds prepare for their high-profile tour of the United States, facing Real Betis, Arsenal, and Manchester United.

New Liverpool head coach, Arne Slot is now making waves with bold squad decisions.

According to The Athletic, Slot is set to axe two centre-backs, Rhys Williams and Billy Koumetio, after demoting them to the under-21s.

This move hints that their days at Anfield are numbered. Williams, 23, who made 19 appearances during Liverpool’s injury-ridden 2020/21 season, is attracting interest from Turkey and several League One clubs. Koumetio, with just two senior appearances, is reportedly on the radar of clubs in Scotland and France.

Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp and is now two weeks into his first pre-season with Liverpool, has a wealth of defensive options, including Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarrell Quansah, Sepp van der Berg, Nathaniel Phillips, and rising star Amara Nallo.

The Dutch manager believes the intense pre-season schedule, featuring top-tier opponents, will be crucial for the team’s preparation ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

“The resistance of the teams we play is strong,” Slot remarked. “We are trying to implement our ideas and maintain what we have done well, keeping the boys fit is our first aim.”
