Support systems are so important in life. Having a strong support network to help you get through hard times in life, as well as to cheer you on all the way is important to your mental and physical well-being. Through a good support system you can accomplish your goals and achieve your dreams and before we get to the point of great difficulties in life, we should implement strategies or have a support system in place to help us through some of those rough times.

See reasons why it is important to have a strong support system;

  • They Provide a Positive Outlook: Part of life is experiencing ups and downs. We want people who understand us and can be depended upon during tough times. We need people who will listen to us and give us honest feedback. People who support you provide constant positivity in your life. They can help get you through hard times and erase feelings of discouragement. They can help channel your energy into doing more positive and creative things, and steer your mind away from the negatives. They can help motivate you, and will be there to celebrate with you when you reach big and small goals.

  • Additional Information and Points of Views: Giving and receiving support from others is a basic human need. Often, talking with your support system can render a different point of view, or solution, than what you thought of on your own. Having wiser and more experienced supporters can also help provide valuable guidance and advice to help you reach your goals or overcome obstacles.

  • Helps Prevent Stress: The goal of social support is to decrease stress. If you are looking to decrease stress by developing a support network, start with people who are already in your life. You may want to make a list and determine who is healthy and positive and who is not. You may want to limit contact with the negative people in your life because they are only out to drain your energy. People who care about you can act as a shield against anxiety and depression. They can be there to listen when you need to vent, or help distract you from worries when you are feeling overwhelmed. Often your friends and family will take notice of when you are starting to stress out or deteriorate before you do. This can help prevent you from falling into a depression or from getting too anxious.

  • Increases your Sense of Belonging: Having others that support and understand you helps you feel important to others. It can help you get through hard times and make you feel as if you have teammates on your journey. Even just knowing that you have others there for you can help you avoid unhealthy reactions to stressful situations.

  • Leads to a Healthier and Happier Life: With a strong support system, your mind is a healthier place and when your mind is healthy, it allows the rest of your life to follow suit. When you are less stressed, you usually eat better and exercise more frequently. Your body becomes healthier and you become happier.
