Sign or Leave — PSG get serious with Kylian Mbappe
Paris Saint-Germain has given Kylian Mbappe a two-week ultimatum to sign a new contract if he intends to remain at the club. The French striker, considered one of the brightest talents in world football, has been linked with potential moves to Liverpool and Real Madrid in recent years.
Kylian Mbappe recently informed PSG that he would not be activating the one-year extension clause in his contract, putting him on track to become a free agent next summer unless the club decides to sell him.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi made it clear that the club will not allow Mbappe to leave for free and emphasized the importance of the player signing a new contract. Speaking at a press conference to introduce new manager Luis Enrique following the dismissal of Christophe Galtier, Al-Khelaifi expressed his desire for Mbappe to stay at the club but stressed that he cannot leave without an appropriate financial agreement.
“It was our oral agreement, and he had expressed it publicly in an interview. So it’s not debatable. And I was really shocked to learn that he intended to leave for free,” Al-Khelaifi stated. “When I received this information, I was shocked and disappointed.”
Al-Khelaifi added that Mbappe has a maximum of two weeks to make a decision regarding his contract. If the 22-year-old forward does not show a willingness to sign a new deal, PSG will be open to considering transfer offers.
The PSG president emphasized that no player, including Mbappe, is bigger than the club, and it is crucial to maintain a clear stance on contractual matters.
Kylian Mbappe, who has scored an impressive 212 goals in 260 appearances for PSG, rejected a transfer to Real Madrid last summer before signing a two-year contract extension with PSG until 2024, with an option for a third year. However, he has now chosen not to exercise the extension clause.
Various reports suggest that Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester United are potential destinations for Mbappe. Loic Tanzi, a reporter for L’Equipe, mentioned that PSG may be open to a transfer this summer to avoid losing the player for free next year.
Tanzi also highlighted that reaching an agreement with Real Madrid could be challenging, as PSG would want a substantial fee for their star player, while Real Madrid may aim for a lower price due to Mbappe’s contract situation.
While Mbappe’s future remains uncertain, the next two weeks will be crucial in determining whether he commits his long-term future to PSG or prepares for a potential move to another top European club. Football enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the outcome of this high-profile contract saga.
