Real reason Ashleigh Plumptre is not with the Super Falcons

“It’s about my physical well-being” — Ashleigh Plumptre on her absence from the Nigeria Women’s team.

Ashleigh Plumptre, the Super Falcons’ defender currently plying her trade at Saudi Pro League women’s club Al-Ittihad, has shed light on her extended absence from the national team setup, citing a personal need to prioritize her physical well-being.

The 25-year-old, recognized for her stellar performance during the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, last represented the Super Falcons in the prestigious tournament, playing an instrumental role in all four games.

Following the expiration of her contract with Leicester City, numerous clubs vied for Plumptre’s signature, drawn by her remarkable displays at the global tournament. Despite starting strongly at her new club in the Middle East, she has not featured in any of the Super Falcons’ three post-World Cup matches since her move to Saudi Arabia.

Concerns from Plumptre’s supporters regarding her absence prompted the defender to clarify her situation, asserting that her decision to stay away from the Falcons was entirely personal.

In an interview with Nigeria Football, Plumptre revealed her desire to make a future return to the national team but stressed the importance of being in peak physical condition for significant games.

“I’ve taken a break from attending the upcoming camps due to a personal decision related to managing my physical well-being,” stated Ashleigh Plumptre during the interview.

“My aim is to eventually rejoin the team. It’s a privilege, and I aim to be in optimal physical shape for key matches.”

Expressing confidence in the Falcons, she emphasized her intent to contribute maximally to the team once she achieves the ideal fitness level required for competitive football.

“I’m observing the team’s progress from my current position, but I aim to reach a point where I can actively compete and offer my best to the team in peak condition,” added Plumptre.
