"Only America can save us from Israel" — Lebanon

In the wake of an Israeli airstrike that killed senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Qubaisi, the Foreign Minister of Lebanon Abdallah Bou Habib has voiced sharp criticism of U.S. President Joe Biden’s plea for calm at the U.N. General Assembly.

Habib expressed disappointment, describing Biden’s remarks as “not strong, not promising,” and called for the U.S. to take a more assertive role.

Following the airstrike that killed Ibrahim Qubaisi in Beirut on Tuesday, Bou Habib argued that the U.S., as Israel’s most powerful ally, was the only nation capable of halting the growing violence. “The United States is the key to our salvation,” he declared during an event in New York hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

He added, “Washington is the only country that can really make a difference in the Middle East and with regard to Lebanon.”

His comments reflect mounting desperation as Israeli airstrikes continue to devastate Lebanon, leaving 569 dead, including 50 children, and displacing thousands of civilians.

With Lebanon teetering on the edge of a full-scale conflict, Habib emphasized that only Washington, Israel’s closest ally and arms supplier, has the influence to deescalate tensions and prevent the country from spiraling into chaos.
