“Payback against America” — Russia escalates energy war
In a chilling response to Ukraine’s use of US-made ATACMS missiles, Russia unleashed a massive overnight assault on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, leaving over 1 million Ukrainians without power as winter bites.
President Vladimir Putin, addressing a security summit in Kazakhstan, justified the widespread strikes, claiming Russia targeted “military facilities, defense industry facilities, and their support systems.”
Notably absent from his remarks, however, was the acknowledgment of the catastrophic damage inflicted on Ukraine’s energy grid.

This latest attack marks Russia’s 11th large-scale offensive on Ukraine’s power supply this year, a grim tactic that has plunged the nation into rolling blackouts and emergency outages. Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Halushchenko, described the assault as a “massive enemy attack” affecting 14 regions across the country.
In Kyiv, where residents sought refuge in metro stations during a nine-hour air raid, authorities reported no immediate casualties, though missile strikes injured five individuals in other regions, including central Vinnytsia and southern Odesa.
The damage also reached the business sector in Kharkiv, further straining the nation’s resources.
