Nigerian icon Onyeka Onwenu dies of Cardiac arrest

In a shocking news in the early hours of Wednesday, iconic Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, and activist Onyeka Onwenu, fondly known as “The Elegant Stallion,” is reported to have passed away at the age of 72.

The beloved icon was reportedly performing at the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, when she tragically collapsed.

Eyewitnesses at the event recounted the heartbreaking moment, stating that Onyeka Onwenu had just completed a soulful performance when she suddenly slumped. She was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Onyeka Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned decades, with hits like “Wait for Me,” a duet with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian music scene.

Beyond her music, she was a fervent advocate for human rights and social justice, holding prominent roles, including Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
