Nigeria Police enforce new uniforms for supernumerary officers

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Olukayode Egbetokun, has directed all organizations employing Supernumerary Police (SPY) personnel to strictly comply with the newly standardized uniforms for these officers.

This directive was issued on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the new SPY uniforms, where Egbetokun was represented by Bala Ciroma, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Administration and Finance.

Egbetokun emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is taking active steps to prevent the unauthorized production and distribution of the Supernumerary Police uniforms, including those for SPY personnel.

He stressed that all organizations utilizing SPY officers must adhere to the new uniform standards, with guidance on registration and acquisition to be provided by the Force Quartermaster and state personnel.

The Inspector-General also highlighted that the Nigeria Police Act 2020 formally establishes the Supernumerary Police as an integral unit within the force, detailing their powers, privileges, and functions. He noted that the lack of a standardized uniform has historically impeded the SPY Unit’s ability to establish a distinct identity.

However, the current force management team has recognized the importance of the SPY Unit in augmenting security efforts nationwide and is committed to enhancing its professionalism and visibility through these new uniforms.

Egbetokun also directed all Police Training Schools to adopt the new uniform issuance model for SPY personnel, ensuring consistency across the country.
