Moment ‘Snow’ falls in Taraba community (Photos)
As multiple counts of severe rain hit most States in Nigeria, some residents in Taraba have witnessed an abroad-like scenery of ‘snow’ falling from the sky.
The residents of Nguroje town in Sardauna local government area of Taraba state who witnessed the wonder stated that the ‘ice rain‘ (as they called it) lasted for over 40 minutes.
According to the residents of the community, such an occurrence would be the first time it had happened in the area. The excited community members took out buckets and other containers to collect some of the ice many researchers claimed was hailstones.
Hailstones are formed when raindrops are carried upward by thunderstorm updrafts into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere and freeze. Hailstones then grow by colliding with liquid water drops that freeze onto the hailstone’s surface.
This might be a rare sight in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous city with a tropical climate typical of most of the continent. However, residents of the hilly, temperate state of Plateau and neighboring communities would stridently disagree.
Some few years back, such an occurrence was felt in the Gudu District of the Federal Capital Tertiary, Abuja.
It was reported that in 2018, some residents in the area were seen gathering the hailstones to have a clear view of what they look like.
