Mason Greenwood considers dumping England
In a potential twist ahead of Euro 2024, Mason Greenwood could be considering a shift in his international allegiance after reportedly receiving an ‘offer’.
Once heralded as one of English football’s brightest prospects, Greenwood’s trajectory took a tumultuous turn when he faced serious allegations, including attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior. However, in February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges against him.
Manchester United, after conducting an internal investigation last summer, opted to send him on a season-long loan to LaLiga outfit Getafe.
Greenwood’s stint in Spain has been marked by promising performances, sparking speculation about his return to the international stage.
Although the 22-year-old hasn’t represented England since his senior debut in August 2020, there’s a possibility he could change his national team allegiance to Jamaica. Eligible through his father, Andrew, FIFA regulations would permit such a move despite his previous appearances for England.
FIFA’s criteria for a player to switch national teams include holding the nationality of the new association at the time of their first official appearance, limited appearances in competitive senior games before turning 21, absence from final stages of major tournaments, and a three-year gap since their last senior appearance for the previous national team.
Reports suggest that Greenwood declined Jamaica’s advances last year, despite public interest from manager Heimir Hallgrimsson. However, recent statements from United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, suggest a potential return to Old Trafford next season, leaving the door open for Greenwood to reconsider his options.
