At least eight people have reportedly  died in a shallow earthquake that struck northwest China overnight. 

China authorities disclosed on  Tuesday according to the state-run news outlet Xinhua.

As the rescue work was ongoing, the outlet said that after a 5.9-magnitude quake sent strong tremors through parts of Gansu and neighbouring Qinghai province,  it struck at 11:59 pm local time Monday (1559 GMT).
