Man United hierarchy hold 'intense talks' as staff plan to resign

The Mason Greenwood situation has reportedly placed Man United in a crisis situation as the club debates on its next line of action.

According to a new report shared by The Athletic and SportBible, the Old Trafford hierarchy have convened a crisis meeting with concerned staff members.

The alleged staff members are stated to be contemplating resignation due to the potential reinstatement of football prodigy Mason Greenwood.

The 21-year-old player has been suspended by the club since January last year, following allegations stemming from online images and videos involving a woman.

Greenwood was subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior in connection with the allegations.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the charges in February of this year. Concurrently, Man United launched its own internal investigation into the matter.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the club announced that they are progressing through the final stages of their internal inquiry into Greenwood, having concluded the fact-finding phase.

This statement came shortly after The Athletic reported that Manchester United’s trajectory was leaning towards the reintegration of Greenwood in some capacity.

Nonetheless, the fervent debate surrounding his potential return, coupled with other considerations, has led the club to reassess their plans.

Sources familiar with the matter, who chose to remain anonymous, have revealed that senior United executives engaged in several intense meetings with staff members.

A fraction of employees reportedly expressed a sense of shame over the club’s potential decision to welcome Greenwood back.

The Athletic’s investigation alleges that certain staff members even discussed the possibility of resigning should the club proceed with the rumored plan outlined by United’s CEO, Richard Arnold.

Furthermore, some employees are said to be exploring coordinated actions, including the prospect of a strike.

The report from The Athletic further indicates that the club’s preparations for Greenwood’s return included an evaluation of the anticipated sentiments from external figures.

Football pundits, journalists, and politicians were reportedly categorized as either supportive, open-minded, or hostile toward Greenwood’s reintegration.

The assessment purportedly listed various domestic abuse charities under the “hostile” category.

In response to these claims, a spokesperson for Man United conveyed to The Athletic,

“Manchester United has meticulously mapped out different potential scenarios concerning Mason Greenwood’s future.

“The Athletic has been privy to selective components of one such scenario plan from several weeks ago.

“This is a complex and delicate case, and it is only appropriate that we approach it with thoroughness and prudence. As previously stated, we are in the final stages of this process and will arrive at a conclusion expeditiously.”
